Through its Equity Leaders Program (ELP), Equity Bank Rwanda PLC has provided 32 students with opportunities to pursue their studies abroad.
The students were bid farewell on August 14, 2026.
The program aims to develop the potential of young people who have demonstrated exceptional academic abilities, preparing them to become future leaders of Rwanda and Africa. It supports them in studying at leading universities around the world.
Equity Leaders Program Supports Top Students
When the results of the national secondary school examinations are released, Equity Bank Rwanda PLC works with the Government of Rwanda to identify 72 top-performing students. They are then assigned to 36 Equity Bank branches across the country, where they begin working.
After working for 10 months, the bank begins connecting them with mentors who guide them through the process of applying to and securing admission to leading universities.
Once a university has been secured, the bank covers tuition and travel expenses, while Equity Bank Rwanda PLC also provides the students with funds to cover other essential needs.

105 Students Sent to Universities Abroad
In the five years since the program was launched in Rwanda, it has sent 105 students to 49 universities in 19 countries across five continents.
The students are sent abroad in different cohorts, with the latest group being the fifth cohort.
One of the students who was sent to study at Pomona College in the United States said:
“This is a great program for young people because it has helped us achieve our dreams. The opportunities we have received, the information we have gained, the people we have met who have supported us, and even where we are going to study are all thanks to this program.”

“Equity Bank Rwanda PLC continues to stay close to us. Even when we return home for holidays, we come and work, and we also support our fellow students so that they can reach where we have reached.”

Students Urged to Maintain Rwandan Identity
The Managing Director of Equity Bank Rwanda PLC, Hannington Namara, advised the students to maintain their Rwandan identity and culture even as they pursue their studies abroad.
“As you interact with people from different parts of the world, try to seek new ideas, but continue to be who you are and remember the values of Ndi Umunyarwanda.”
ELP does not only support students pursuing studies outside Rwanda. It has also supported some students to study at universities within the country and has expanded its activities to include internship opportunities, collaboration with farmers and engagement with various other sectors.
