Rwanda Senate to Conduct Nationwide Visits to Assess Livestock Development

The Rwanda Parliament, through its Upper House, the Senate, has announced a series of nationwide visits aimed at assessing the progress of livestock development and its impact on citizens’ livelihoods across the country.

According to a press release issued on Friday, the visits will be conducted from January 20 to January 28, 2026. During this period, Senators will travel to different districts to meet citizens, local leaders, and livestock farmers in their communities.

Direct Engagement with Citizens and Farmers

The visits are designed to promote direct dialogue between Senators and the public. Through these interactions, lawmakers will observe livestock activities on the ground and listen to farmers’ experiences, challenges, and success stories.

By engaging directly with citizens, the Senate aims to better understand how livestock farming contributes to household income, food security, and job creation. This approach also allows Senators to collect firsthand information that cannot always be captured through reports alone.

Focus on Animal Feed and Productivity

Speaking about the purpose of the exercise, the President of the Senate, Dr. Kalinda François-Xavier, said the outreach will pay special attention to access to animal feed and good livestock management practices.

“The objective of this exercise is to engage with citizens in their communities, understand how they participate in livestock farming, and assess how income generated from livestock contributes to improving their livelihoods,” he said.

Dr. Kalinda noted that livestock which is well fed and properly managed produces more, therefore helping farmers increase income and improve nutrition at household level. He added that increased productivity is essential for achieving food self-sufficiency and reducing socio-economic challenges faced by rural communities.

Findings to Strengthen Policy and Economic Growth

Before starting the field visits, Senators are scheduled to hold consultations with the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock. The discussions will focus on the National Livestock Development Plan, progress made so far, availability of quality animal feed, and ongoing efforts to address challenges in the sector.

The Senate expects that findings from the visits will guide policy oversight and help strengthen livestock farming as a key pillar of economic growth. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to support sustainable development, improve household incomes, and reinforce Rwanda’s national economy through evidence-based decision-making and inclusive governance.
