Stade Amahoro is one of the most important sports facilities in the world, as it is among those that meet the requirements of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). However, its renovation is ongoing, with an additional budget of 90.7 billion Rwf planned for the 2026/2027 financial year.
The newly renovated Amahoro Stadium was officially opened on July 1, 2024, in a ceremony presided over by President Paul Kagame, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Dr. Patrice Motsepe.
Amahoro Stadium has a capacity of 45,000 people, and is built on an area of 75,000 square meters. The height of the building from ground to ceiling is 40 meters.
This international stadium was built at a cost of about $160 million, and it includes all the necessary CAF and FIFA standards, making it one of the best stadiums in the world.

Stadium to Be Upgraded for More Than Sports
After completing and handing over the stadium, it was found that it needed to be renovated again, so that it would be better and more usable by those who organize various events there.
In the 2026/2027 State Budget year that began in July 2026, key projects include the renovation of sports infrastructure, especially various stadiums, whether in Kigali or in the provinces.
There is also 90.7 billion Frw to renovate the Amahoro Stadium, although it has been renovated and refurbished for two years.
In an interview with IGIHE, an official from the Ministry of Sports, he revealed that this stadium will be renovated to make it more of an infrastructure that hosts various activities other than just sports.

Bigger Screens and Better Visibility Planned
Those who go to the Amahoro Stadium often express concerns about not being able to see the broadcasts clearly on the two video projectors of the Amahoro Stadium, whether they are sitting close or far away.
One of the renovations to this stadium is to expand the video projectors in the stadium, making them larger so that wherever a person sits in the stadium, they can see the images or messages being broadcast.
Poor visibility led to the installation of televisions in the grandstands, to make it easier for those who are present to follow the events taking place there.
Grandstands and Concert Facilities to Be Improved
Those who arrive at Stade Amahoro see that those who sit in the grandstands can be affected by rain if it rains. Therefore, the grandstands will be renovated, well-designed in a way that does not interfere with those who sit there.
To date, Stade Amahoro does not host any special entertainment events, even those that are combined with other activities such as sports and others.
Of the 90.7 billion Rwf that will be used to renovate this infrastructure, some will be used to make it so that it can accommodate a large concert, without damaging the playing field.
This is related to the sound of Stade Amahoro, where those in attendance often expressed that they have difficulty hearing what is being said, because additional loudspeakers are used in addition to the ones installed.
This stadium also has other activities related to the normal maintenance of the infrastructure that has been completed, such as cleaning and various other things.

Spider Camera Remains Operational
The special camera ‘Spider Camera’ located in the Amahoro Stadium has been unused for some time, but the Ministry of Sports, which is also responsible for this stadium, says that it has not had any problems because it is used for some important activities.
It is a camera that runs on wires in the air, manufactured by the Ross Video Ltd. factory. It can run at a speed of nine meters per second at a distance of 250 by 250 meters.
It weighs 340 kilograms, has a length of 87 centimeters, a width of 88 centimeters and a height of 87 centimeters.
It has the ability to prevent dust or high temperatures from reaching it because it has been given an outer body made of aluminum. The base temperature should be between -10 and 40 degrees Celsius.
Its batteries are powered by air. One has a capacity of four hours, and is working continuously.
The types of cameras that will be installed include those for shooting events or games that are happening right now, such as Sony (P1, P43 and P50), Grass Valley (LDX 80 and LDX 86), Panasonic AK-UB300 and Hitachi DH-H200.
Those that will be used for regular shooting include RED Epic (Dragon, Helium and Monstro), ARRI Alexa Mini, Sony (F55 and Venice) and Panasonic Varicam.
More Stadium Projects Included in 2026/27 Budget
The 2026/27 budget includes over Rwf 1.3 billion allocated to pay arrears for the construction of Ngoma Stadium, Rwf 1.3 billion for the construction of Bugesera Stadium and another Rwf 1.3 billion for the construction of Nyagatare Stadium.
The Ministry of Sports indicates that although various infrastructure projects are funded, they are also used to recover the funds spent, since they are investments made.
In the 2025/26 year, the Ministry of Sports had a target of generating at least Rwf 5 billion from sports infrastructure, but by the end of the year it had already generated Rwf 5.69 billion.
This is money from the Huye Stadium, BK Arena, Kigali Pelé Stadium and Stade Amahoro, since in October 2025 it had been entrusted to the contractor QA Venue Solutions.
