Residents told IGIHE the girl was assaulted with knives, sustaining severe injuries. They urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice in a public trial, describing the killing as cruel and inhumane.
Local Authorities Respond
Remera Sector Executive Secretary Alexis Niyigena condemned the murder as horrific. He confirmed that security agencies are actively searching for the suspect.
“This is a tragedy. We lost a 17-year-old girl under very unfortunate circumstances. At around 1:00 a.m., a resident stepped outside to check on his livestock and noticed the house where the girl was sleeping was open. When he entered, he found she had been killed,” Niyigena said.
He explained that local authorities immediately notified security organs, who arrived at the scene and began investigations. The victim’s body was later transported to Kigali for forensic examination.
Security Measures in Place
Niyigena emphasized that the area does not face unusual insecurity. He noted that whenever crimes occur, suspects are pursued, arrested, and prosecuted.

He cited recent operations against illegal miners who had contributed to insecurity, many of whom were apprehended and punished.
He assured residents that if the suspect behind the girl’s murder is arrested, the case will be heard publicly, as requested by community members, to serve as a deterrent.
