OpenAI has announced that its artificial intelligence technology has found a solution to a mathematics problem that has challenged experts for decades.
The company said on September 9, 2026, that it used a large team of AI programs and advanced computational systems to work on the problem, reaching a solution in just 88 hours.
AI Team Worked for 88 Hours
According to OpenAI, the effort involved about 10,000 AI programs, some of which carried out tasks without direct human involvement.
Although the solution was reached within a short period, OpenAI said the AI systems exchanged about three million messages and used the equivalent of 130 billion in external resources.
The company estimated that carrying out the same level of work using its most advanced AI systems would have cost nearly $10 million based on its own pricing.

Problem Linked to Navier–Stokes Equations
The problem is related to the Navier–Stokes Equations, which are used to describe how fluids such as water and air move.
Important questions surrounding these equations have remained unresolved for about 90 years, making them among the most challenging problems in mathematics.
OpenAI described the achievement as a major demonstration of the progress being made in artificial intelligence and its ability to tackle complex mathematical problems.
Solution Still Needs Independent Verification
Despite OpenAI’s announcement, the solution has not yet been independently reviewed by other mathematicians.
It has also not been accepted by the Clay Mathematics Institute, the US-based organization that administers the Millennium Prize, which includes some of the most difficult unsolved problems in mathematics.
This means the announcement does not yet amount to formal recognition that the long-standing mathematical problem has been solved.

OpenAI Says AI Made Rapid Progress
OpenAI said it began developing a new AI program toward the end of August and that the system quickly demonstrated strong mathematical abilities.
The company said the purpose of publishing the solution was to demonstrate the progress its AI systems have made rather than to seek the Millennium Prize.
OpenAI said: “Our goal in publishing this solution is to demonstrate the major progress our AI programs have made. We are not seeking to be awarded the Millennium Prize for this solution.”
