Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of Sunday’s El Clásico against FC Barcelona after falling ill shortly before the highly anticipated La Liga encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.
Real Madrid confirmed the Belgian goalkeeper’s late withdrawal in an official statement on October 25, 2026, citing a flu-like illness. The club called up young goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn to replace him in the squad.
Courtois had featured in Real Madrid’s midweek UEFA Champions League victory over RB Leipzig. His absence is a setback for the team ahead of one of the most important fixtures of the Spanish football season.
Lunin Set to Take Over in Goal
With Courtois unavailable, Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is expected to start between the posts against Barcelona.
The match will mark Lunin’s first competitive appearance of the 2026/27 season. He will be tasked with filling the role of Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper in a high-pressure encounter against their historic rivals.
Lunin has previously stepped in for Courtois when required and will now have another opportunity to demonstrate his ability on a major stage.
Real Madrid will face Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25, in a match with significant implications for the La Liga title race.
