Local leaders, educators, and students from multiple sectors across Musanze District gathered on May 29 to participate in the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The district-wide events, held across multiple locations, including the event at Ubworoherane stadium and Kinigi sector, served as a powerful platform for honouring the victims, comforting survivors, and reinforcing the critical role of the education sector in building a unified, resilient nation free from genocide ideology.

Commemoration at Ubworoherane Stadium
Students and staff from academic institutions within the Muhoza, Cyuve, and Musanze sectors assembled at the Ubworoherane Stadium. The day’s activities began at the Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri Genocide Memorial, where district officials, school administrators, and students laid wreaths and paid respects to the victims.
In his welcoming address, Allan Ntambara, Executive Secretary of Muhoza Sector, emphasised the importance of remembrance. He noted that the process involves reflecting on the past while focusing on Rwanda’s progress through unity, reconciliation, and resilience.
Mayor Claudien Nsengimana of Musanze District addressed the assembly, highlighting the role of educators in shaping the youth. He urged teachers to lead by example, instilling values of humanity, discipline, and merit. He also offered words of comfort to survivors and called on citizens to reject genocide ideology and divisionism.

Kinigi Sector Commemoration
Concurrently, another commemoration took place in Kinigi Sector. The Vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs, Theobald Kayiranga, joined students and educators from the Kinigi and Nyange sectors. This event began with a visit to the Kinigi Genocide Memorial, where officials and school representatives honoured the victims laid to rest there.
