As Rwanda continues activities marking the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi, members of the country’s financial and stock market community joined survivors in Kamonyi District to honor victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The remembrance event brought together leaders and representatives from the Rwanda Capital Market Authority (CMA), financial institutions, stock market stakeholders, public officials, and survivor organizations.
Survivor Testimony Shares Pain and Gratitude
During the ceremony, Speciose Mukarugambwa, a survivor from Kamonyi, shared testimony about the suffering endured during and after the Genocide against the Tutsi.
He reflected on the difficult journey survivors have faced over the years while expressing gratitude to President Paul Kagame for his role in stopping the genocide and helping restore security and hope to the nation.
Leaders Say Remembrance Is a National Duty
Romeo Ngarambe, Director General of the Rwanda Capital Market Authority, said commemoration should never be treated as a routine event but as a responsibility to preserve history and honor the victims.
He said, “We are here to remember our loved ones who were taken away from us, to pay tribute to them, and to reaffirm that the history and legacy they left behind will never be forgotten.”
Support for Survivors Must Go Beyond Words
Ngarambe emphasized that remembrance must be matched with practical support for survivors, especially families facing daily challenges and economic hardship.
He said, “You are not alone. We are thinking of you, we are thinking of you, and we will continue to be close to you.”
Unity and Truth Key to Rwanda’s Future
He continued by saying that the broader capital markets community has a responsibility to contribute to the development of the country, but that this development is valuable only when it is based on unity, peace, truth, humanity and building a future that gives hope to all.
As commemorations continue across the country, Rwandans and friends of Rwanda are reflecting on the history of discrimination that led to the Genocide against the Tutsi while renewing their commitment to ensure it never happens again.
