President of the Republic, Paul Kagame, welcomed Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is in Rwanda for a two-day visit. Their discussions focused on regional security and cooperation.
According to the Office of the President of Rwanda, the meeting took place on the evening of Saturday, July 25, 2026, shortly after General Muhoozi’s arrival in Kigali.
Focus on Rwanda–Uganda Cooperation
The Presidency stated: “President Kagame received General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda (UPDF).” It added that the two leaders held talks “centered on strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and Uganda, as well as peace, security, and stability in the region.”
Senior Officials Welcome Ugandan Delegation
General Muhoozi was accompanied by Andrew Mwenda, a communications expert and his advisor. He was welcomed at Kigali International Airport by Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Mubarakh Muganga.
Muhoozi’s Previous Visits to Rwanda
Muhoozi last visited Rwanda in March 2025, during which he toured the Nyakinama Military Academy in Musanze District.
Known for referring to President Kagame as “My Uncle,” Muhoozi gifted him ten cows during a 2022 visit. In 2023, he announced that the herd had multiplied.
Role in Strengthening Bilateral Relations
A prominent military figure in Uganda and the region, Muhoozi often comments on regional security. Last year, he stated that the UPDF and RDF are “brothers forever.”
He played a key role in restoring relations between Uganda and Rwanda after tensions. In May 2022, he said that reuniting the UPDF and RDF was one of his most significant achievements in his military career.
