A student at the Education Institute for Blind Children Kibeho in Nyaruguru District has emerged as the top-performing candidate in the Languages category in the national secondary school leaving examinations.
The student, Habumugisha Samuel, studied Literature in English, French and Kinyarwanda (LFK). He scored 93.53%, placing him 11th nationally.
School Celebrates Habumugisha’s Performance
His Entrepreneurship teacher, Mutabazi François, said the school was delighted by the student’s outstanding performance.
He said: “We are very happy. In fact, he has always been a good student and is very talented. He used to rank first in his class. He consistently scored above 90%, but you could not necessarily expect him to emerge as the top student nationally, especially given the many schools across the country with highly talented students,” .
Mutabazi said the school does everything possible to ensure that Habumugisha and his classmates, as well as students in the History, Geography and Literature in English (HGL) combination, have the necessary conditions to study and perform well.
He said: “The school does everything possible to provide what they need, even though equipment for people with disabilities is very expensive. It is also difficult to find such equipment being sold in Rwanda, as it is mostly imported. Although it is expensive, the school administration makes every effort to find donors to support them, enabling the students to study effectively.”
Other Students Also Perform Well
The teacher explained that, besides Habumugisha, another student, Niragire Gadi, who studied HGL, scored 94.27%, followed by Nyirabatware Alverie, who scored 90.37%.
Speaking about Niragire, Mutabazi said: “Although he may not have been the top student overall, he is also among the best-performing students. Habumugisha Samuel was the top student in Languages, while Niragire Gadi was the top-performing student in HGL.”

School Holds Its First National Examination
The school was established by a congregation of nuns from Poland led by Sister Rafaela. The school’s leadership used to identify children within the community and enroll them so they could receive an education.
This was the first time students from the school sat for the national secondary school leaving examinations.
Mutabazi said the school’s key to success is its commitment to employing highly qualified teachers who are dedicated to their work and do not focus solely on their salaries. He added that the relatively low number of students in each class also contributes significantly to their success.
Dedicated Teachers Support Students
he said: “When the school administration recruits teachers, it looks for highly competent teachers. In addition, the teachers at this school are highly dedicated. We do not teach as people who are simply working for a salary. We teach as people who, I would say, consider it a calling, and we do our best to care for these children in every possible way.”
All 15 students from the school who sat for the national secondary school leaving examinations passed. Niragire obtained the highest score at 94.27%, while the lowest-performing student scored 68.86%.
