A 58 years old British tourist has been arrested in Turkey after allegedly spitting on the country’s flag, which was displayed in the reception area of a hotel.
The man, identified as Stephen Kerr, was staying at a hotel in the Dinek area of Alanya, in Antalya Province. He reportedly had an argument with hotel staff over an unspecified issue before approaching the Turkish flag displayed inside the hotel and spitting on it.

Hotel Staff Report Incident
Following the incident, hotel staff detained Kerr while waiting for security authorities to arrive and reported the matter to the police.
Police officers subsequently arrived at the hotel and arrested Kerr.

Tourist Referred to Court
After his arrest, Kerr was questioned at a local police station with the assistance of an interpreter before being referred to the Alanya Courthouse.
Following an initial hearing, the court ordered that he be remanded in custody and face charges of “insulting the symbols of national sovereignty.”
He was subsequently transferred to Alanya L-Type Prison.

The incident occurred in a country where the Turkish national flag is regarded as a powerful symbol of national sovereignty and unity. Kerr now faces legal proceedings over the alleged incident.
