Members of the Rwanda Scouts Association have officially joined fellow citizens to mark the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi. The solemn event took place during the ongoing 100-day national mourning period at the Nyanza-Kicukiro Genocide Memorial. The morning program began with an emotional moment of silence to honor the thousands of victims buried at the historical site.
Afterward, the visitors carefully laid beautiful flower wreaths at the resting place of the genocide victims. Participants also took part in deep discussions focused on the history of the tragedy and the long journey survivors have endured.
Senior organizers extensively taught the young scouts about the complex history of the Genocide against the Tutsi from 1959 up to 1994. Furthermore, a brave survivor from the local Nyanza-Kicukiro neighborhood shared a powerful personal testimony.
This moving story deeply touched many young attendees and leaders in the audience. Therefore, the association used this opportunity to strengthen the historical knowledge of the younger generation. The gathering clearly showed that youth groups play a major role in keeping the memory alive.

Scouts Urged to Defend Historical Truth and Fight Against Denial
Speakers actively urged the young participants to continue fighting individuals who distort, deny, or minimize the Genocide against the Tutsi. The leadership reminded everyone to uphold the truth and preserve accurate historical records for future generations. Additionally, the youth were encouraged to learn from the immense courage of the RPF Inkotanyi forces that successfully stopped the Genocide.
Consequently, the trainers asked the scouts to contribute daily to building a united nation that is completely free from division. This ongoing struggle requires dedication, resilience, and a clear understanding of the past.
Senior scout officials emphasized that these specific community initiatives help young people understand their country’s complex history much better. By doing so, the youth can take a very active role in preserving vital national memories.
This active participation remains essential to ensuring that mass atrocities never happen again anywhere in the world. The lesson focused heavily on cultivating a shared Rwandan identity that overcomes any old ethnic differences.
