Innovative projects using artificial intelligence and modern technology in education are set to receive up to $50,000 each through the Ed Tech Fellowship program in Rwanda. The initiative is backed by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by the ICT Chamber to scale data driven education solutions and connect innovators directly with schools for real-world impact.

Kigali Discussions Highlight Education Challenges
Discussions held in Kigali on April 30, 2026 highlighted key challenges including limited budgets, inadequate infrastructure, and gaps in digital skills. Stakeholders emphasized the need for stronger investment and capacity building to fully integrate AI into Rwanda’s education system.

Eight Projects to Reach 40,000 Learners
According to project coordinator Dieudonné Dusabimana, eight selected projects will each target at least 5,000 beneficiaries every year. This means the program could reach a combined 40,000 learners annually across Rwanda. Beyond funding, innovators will also receive technical support to ensure effective implementation and national scalability.

Teacher Training and Safe AI Use Prioritized
Officials from the Ministry of ICT and Innovation and the Rwanda Education Board said efforts are ongoing to expand responsible AI adoption. More than 5,000 teachers have already been trained in AI, while new policies are being developed to promote safe technology use among students.

Experts Call for Local AI Research
Experts also called for increased local research and stronger infrastructure, including a national data center, to help build Rwanda’s homegrown artificial intelligence ecosystem.
