A 46 year old man in Musanze District was shot dead after allegedly attempting to attack a police officer with a machete while security forces were trying to arrest his son, who was suspected of theft and other criminal activities.
The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. in Gapfuro Village, Garuka Cell, Musanze Sector, where the deceased, Emmanuel Munyamashuri, lived with his family.
Man Tried to Prevent Son’s Arrest
According to police, security forces went to Munyamashuri’s home to arrest his 22-year-old son, Irakoze Félix, who was suspected of being involved in theft, including burglary and violent acts. Police said the suspect had previously escaped justice.
When security officers arrived at the home, Munyamashuri reportedly came outside carrying a machete and attempted to prevent them from entering.
Police spokesperson for the Northern Province, CIP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, confirmed the incident.
He said: “When security forces came to arrest Felix Irakoze, his father came out with a machete intending to fight them, shouting that no one would enter his house.”
Police Say Warning Shots Were Fired
CIP Ngirabakunzi explained that the officers identified themselves as security personnel and instructed Munyamashuri to stop, but he allegedly ignored them and continued advancing toward one of the officers.
Police first fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to stop him. However, according to the spokesperson, Munyamashuri continued approaching the officer and attempted to cut him with the machete.
The officers then shot him, killing him at the scene.

Son Remains Suspected of Theft
Following the incident, Munyamashuri’s body was taken to the mortuary at Ruhengeri Hospital.
His son, Irakoze Félix, who was the target of the arrest operation, had not been arrested at the time of the report.
Police continue to pursue the suspect over the allegations of theft, burglary and violent acts.
