The Southern Province administration, together with the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Rwanda National Police, and other government institutions, has urged residents of Nyamagabe District to play a more active role in preventing crime, protecting the environment, and working closely with security agencies to safeguard peace and development.
The community outreach campaign was led by Southern Province Governor Alice Kayitesi alongside senior military and police officials in Kitabi Sector, where leaders emphasized that sustainable security depends on strong cooperation between citizens and public institutions.
Governor Urges Residents to Report Security Threats
Addressing residents, Governor Alice Kayitesi stressed that lasting security can only be achieved when citizens actively support local leadership and security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and participating in community development initiatives.
She also encouraged residents to protect the environment, particularly Nyungwe National Park, warning that the dry season increases the risk of forest fires and calling for greater vigilance to preserve the country’s natural resources.
Leadership School Promotes Citizen-Centered Governance
During discussions with community representatives, Governor Kayitesi highlighted the importance of the Leadership School approach, which encourages leaders to remain close to citizens and understand their daily challenges.
She said listening directly to residents enables authorities and communities to work together in identifying practical and sustainable solutions that improve people’s well-being.
Security Agencies Stress Crime Prevention and Public Cooperation
Southern Province Army Commander Brig. Gen. J. Majyambere reminded residents that maintaining security is not solely the responsibility of the army and police but a shared responsibility of every citizen. He encouraged the public to continue reporting suspicious individuals and activities that could threaten peace.
Nyamagabe District Police Commander SSP M. Muhire also urged citizens to help prevent crimes before they occur by reporting illegal activities such as the sale of substandard alcoholic drinks, acts of violence, and domestic conflicts.
Meanwhile, Rwanda National Police spokesperson in the Southern Province, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, appealed to residents to avoid activities that may cause fires during the dry season. He called for the reporting of illegal charcoal production, unsafe beekeeping practices, and other activities that could endanger communities and the environment.
Residents Welcome Leaders’ Engagement
Residents of Kitabi Sector welcomed the outreach visit, saying it demonstrated the government’s commitment to staying connected with communities and addressing their concerns.
One resident, Dukundane Marie Jeanne, said direct engagement with leaders strengthens trust and cooperation between citizens and authorities, creating a stronger foundation for protecting security and promoting development.
The Southern Province administration reaffirmed that continued collaboration between leadership, security institutions, and citizens remains essential to preventing crime, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development across the province.
