The expansion of the Giporoso–Masaka road is one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects in the City of Kigali, owing to the long-standing traffic challenges it is expected to resolve.
The 10.3-kilometre road will be upgraded from two lanes to four lanes, significantly increasing its capacity and improving traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
New Flyovers to Ease Traffic Congestio n
A key feature of the project is the construction of a 1.3-kilometre flyover stretching from Prince House in Remera to Cyamitsingi, while another elevated section will extend toward Masaka.
The flyovers are expected to reduce congestion and improve the movement of vehicles, particularly during peak hours.
Construction will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions to motorists and ensure that traffic continues to flow during the implementation period.
Project to Solve Long-Standing Flooding Problem
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to provide a permanent solution to the section near Nyandungu Eco Park, which has frequently been damaged by flooding.
Improved drainage and modern engineering designs are expected to make the road more resilient to heavy rains and climate-related challenges.
Strategic Link to Key National Infrastructure
The project will improve access to several strategic national facilities, including the new University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), which is set to relocate to Masaka.
It will also enhance connectivity to the Masoro Industrial Area and complement government plans to construct another road linking the corridor to the new Bugesera International Airport, currently under development.
Chinese Support and Skills Transfer to Local Engineers
The road project is being financed with support from the Government of China at a cost of more than Rwf86 billion.
Construction will be carried out by Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group Company, which is expected to work closely with Rwandan engineers and contractors to facilitate knowledge transfer and strengthen local capacity in the construction of modern road infrastructure.
Preparatory Works Near Completion Ahead of Construction
Preparatory activities for the project are already at an advanced stage.
Residents and businesses affected by the expansion have been relocated, while existing structures along the road corridor have been cleared to pave the way for construction.
Utility relocation works, including the installation of new water pipelines and other essential infrastructure, are also progressing well.
According to project plans, the main construction works are expected to begin within the next two months, marking the start of one of Kigali’s largest road infrastructure projects in recent years.
