Rwandan cyclists delivered an impressive performance at the ‘Grand Prix International VTT Chantal Biya’ cycling competition in Cameroon, with Martha Ntakirutimana, Charlotte Iragena and Banzi Buhari each securing a medal in their respective categories.
The three cyclists, accompanied by their coach Byukusenge Nathan, arrived back in Kigali on Monday night, August 11, 2026, after competing in the mountain cycling competition.
Martha Ntakirutimana Wins Gold
In the senior women’s category, Martha Ntakirutimana claimed first place to win the gold medal.
Her teammate Charlotte Iragena finished second, earning the silver medal and completing a strong one-two finish for Rwanda in the women’s race.
The results highlighted Rwanda’s growing presence in mountain cycling competitions on the continent.
Banzi Buhari Secures Bronze
In the senior men’s professional category, Rwandan rider Banzi Buhari also reached the podium after finishing third.
His performance earned him the bronze medal, giving Rwanda a total of three medals from the competition.
The results meant that all three Rwandan riders who participated in the senior categories returned home with medals.
Riders Compete on Mountain Course
The competition was held on an 11.3-kilometre mountain course in the Bagofit area of Cameroon.
The event marked the third edition of the competition since it was named after Mrs Chantal Biya.
Both women’s and men’s categories competed on the challenging mountain course, testing riders’ endurance, technical ability and climbing skills.
Competition Attracts 90 Cyclists
The ‘Grand Prix International VTT Chantal Biya’ attracted 90 cyclists from 15 countries, bringing together amateur and professional riders in both the women’s and men’s categories, as well as junior cyclists.
Rwanda’s three medals, including one gold, one silver and one bronze, marked a successful outing for the country’s riders and further demonstrated their competitiveness in international mountain cycling events.
