A man in Gisagara District has been arrested on suspicion of killing his girlfriend, reportedly after he suspected that she had infected him with HIV.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 13, 2026, in Kavumu Village, Gitoki Cell, Save Sector, Gisagara District.
The deceased was about 26 years old, while the suspect is approximately 27.
The woman was reportedly selling alcoholic beverages alongside a small shop in the area where the incident occurred. It is suspected that she and the man were in a romantic relationship, which authorities believe may have contributed to the man contracting an incurable illness.
The woman’s body was found inside the house where she conducted her business, where she is believed to have been killed with a knife.
Residents who discovered the body said her throat had been cut and that she had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Investigations Underway
The Executive Secretary of Save Sector, Murenzi Augustin, told IGIHE that initial findings indicated that the woman and the man were in a relationship and had been drinking together in the room.
“The woman was from Karongi District, while the man is from Save. What we found is that they had been drinking together. However, there are reports that they had a disagreement because one of them had allegedly infected the other with an incurable illness. Investigations have begun and are ongoing,” he said.
The suspect, who worked as a bicycle taxi operator, initially fled the scene but was later arrested by security authorities in Mbazi Sector, Huye District. The deceased’s body was taken to Kibirizi Hospital in Gisagara District for examination.
Authorities Warn Against Violence
Murenzi urged residents to refrain from committing murder, warning that such crimes have serious consequences and that anyone convicted by a court faces a severe punishment.
