A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Shanghai was forced to divert to Seattle after a disruptive passenger reportedly caused safety concerns mid-flight, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded overnight.
Passenger Disruption Forces Emergency Diversion
The incident occurred aboard Delta Flight 39, which departed from Los Angeles on Sunday, May 17. The flight was traveling to Shanghai Pudong International Airport when crew members reportedly encountered issues with a passenger while the aircraft was flying off the coast of Northwest Washington.
According to the airline, flight attendants repeatedly instructed the passenger to comply with onboard safety directions. After the individual allegedly refused to follow instructions, the crew decided to divert the Airbus A350-900 to Seattle Tacoma International Airport as a precautionary safety measure.
“For the safety of the aircraft and passengers, the crew chose to divert the flight to Seattle,” a Delta spokesperson told local media.

Law Enforcement Met Aircraft Upon Landing
Authorities met the aircraft immediately after it landed in Seattle. However, officials have not yet revealed the exact nature of the disturbance or confirmed whether the passenger was arrested or charged following the incident.
The international flight was carrying 271 passengers, along with 11 flight attendants and four pilots at the time of the diversion.
Hundreds of Travelers Left Stranded Overnight
The unexpected diversion disrupted travel plans for hundreds of passengers, many of whom were forced to spend the night in Seattle while waiting for a replacement aircraft scheduled to continue the journey to Shanghai on Monday.
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft had already spent nearly 13 hours in the air before the diversion was confirmed. Originally scheduled to depart Los Angeles at 11:30 a.m., the flight eventually took off around 12:15 p.m. before changing course toward Seattle.
