The government is stepping up preparations for floods, landslides and other weather-related disasters as forecasters warn of a potentially very strong El Niño during the October–December 2026 rainy season.
Regional forecasts give a 99% chance of El Niño and a 96% chance of a very strong El Niño during the October–December period.
Rwanda and much of East Africa are expected to receive above-normal rainfall, increasing risks of floods and landslides.

Government Strengthens Disaster Preparedness
Government agencies are strengthening rainfall monitoring, early warning systems, disaster response, and measures to protect vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure.
Officials are urging communities, farmers, humanitarian organisations, and other stakeholders to act on climate forecasts before heavy rains intensify.

Some Areas Could Receive More Than 400mm of Rainfall
Regional experts say some areas of #Rwanda and neighbouring countries could receive more than 400mm of rainfall during the season.
Authorities are also calling for drainage channels to be cleared and for communities to understand and respond quickly to early warnings to reduce the potential human and economic impact.
