A memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda has been established at California State University, Sacramento in the United States.
The Embassy of Rwanda in the United States announced that the memorial symbol was officially installed at the university and inaugurated on May 16, 2026, in honor of those who lost their lives during the Genocide against the Tutsi.

Memorial Inaugurated in Honor of Genocide Victims
The memorial serves as a tribute to more than one million people who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which occurred over a period of 100 days.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the President of California State University, Sacramento, Dr. Luke Wood, while the Rwandan delegation was led by Joseph Nsengimana. Rwandans living in the United States, together with friends of Rwanda, also attended the event to pay tribute to the victims and stand in solidarity with survivors.
Olivier Nduhungirehe Praises the Memorial
Following the inauguration, Olivier Nduhungirehe praised the memorial, describing it as one of the finest memorials dedicated to the Genocide against the Tutsi outside Rwanda. he said: “One of the finest memorials abroad. Thank you very much Sacramento State University,”

Global Efforts to Remember the Genocide against the Tutsi
The Genocide against the Tutsi claimed the lives of more than one million people in just 100 days. To ensure such a tragedy never happens again anywhere in the world, the United Nations designated April 7 as the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
Every year, from April 7 to July 3, Rwandans and friends of Rwanda around the world organize various remembrance activities to honor the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi and promote the values of unity, remembrance, and resilience.
