The Rwanda National Police spokesperson in the Eastern Province, SSP Twizeyimana Hamdun, told IGIHE that the accident occurred in the early morning and involved a Coaster passenger vehicle. He said two people died at the scene, while two others died on the way to hospital.
He said: “We have not yet established the exact cause of the accident, but the driver said the vehicle lost its brakes. Since the accident occurred on a steep downhill stretch, it is possible that excessive speed contributed to the crash. Two people died immediately, while two others died on the way to hospital.”

Police Warn Against Speeding and Drunk Driving
SSP Twizeyimana urged motorists to avoid excessive speed, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and ensure that their vehicles are regularly inspected to confirm that they are in good mechanical condition.
He also said another factor contributing to road accidents in recent days is driver fatigue, urging motorists to avoid driving when exhausted in order to protect their own lives and those of other road users.
“We also urge passengers not to ignore violations committed on the road. If a driver is making dangerous mistakes while driving, report them to the Police as soon as possible so that action can be taken. Passengers can also alert the driver when they notice unsafe driving. This helps everyone look out for one another.”
