Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Kenya Ernest Rwamucyo, and other senior officials preside over the opening of the 14th command post exercise
Rwanda has joined partner states of the East African Community in Nairobi for the 14th multinational armed forces command post exercise, Ushirikiano Imara. The exercise, hosted at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, officially opened with Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Ernest Rwamucyo, alongside senior officials including EAC Deputy Secretary General Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth and Kenya’s Vice Chief of Defence Forces John Mugaravai Omenda.

Regional Forces Unite to Strengthen Security Cooperation
The exercise brings together military, police, and civilian personnel from the bloc’s eight partner states to strengthen regional preparedness, interoperability, and collective security. Rwanda Defence Force soldiers are among the 342 participants from Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, and Tanzania, while Somalia is attending as an observer state.
Exercise Focuses on Peace Support and Counterterrorism Operations
The multinational drills, scheduled to run from May 6 to 28, 2026, are designed to enhance joint operational capabilities in peace support operations. They also focus on counterterrorism, counter-piracy, and disaster management through coordinated training, command post drills, and scenario-based simulations. The symbolic handover of the EAC flag during the opening ceremony underscored unity, cooperation, and the shared commitment of partner states to regional peace and stability.
Officials Highlight Importance of Regional Preparedness
Addressing participants, Lt Gen Omenda said the exercise would strengthen East Africa’s ability to respond to security challenges affecting the region and the continent, including terrorism, piracy, and disasters. The Ushirikiano Imara exercise continues to serve as a vital platform for building trust, coordination, and collective resilience among EAC member states.
