President Paul Kagame visited the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTC Botswana) during his working visit to the country. This institution oversees diamond mining and trade, playing a vital role in the national economy. Established in 2008, DTC Botswana operates as a joint venture.
The Government of Botswana owns a 50% stake, while De Beers Group owns the remaining 50%. During his tour on Thursday morning, President Kagame visited different sections of the company. Officials briefed him on how the facility monitors mines and sorts diamonds by size, shape, and clarity.
This visit highlights the importance of the diamond sector, which contributes up to 40% of Botswana’s Gross Domestic Product.

Strengthening Rwanda and Botswana cooperation through new agreements
Several high-ranking Rwandan officials accompanied the President during the tour. The delegation included State Minister Tesi Rusagara, RDB Deputy CEO Juliana Kangeli Muganza, and Secretary General Havugiyaremye Aimable.
This visit follows the signing of six major cooperation agreements between the two nations on May 6, 2026. These agreements remove visa requirements for citizens of both countries and improve air transport links. Additionally, the two nations signed deals to avoid double taxation and boost health sector collaboration.
President Kagame noted that Rwanda and Botswana share a common vision regarding purposeful governance and accountability. He emphasized that stronger cooperation helps bridge the gap between vision and implementation across the African continent.

Empowering youth and fostering continental growth
Speaking during a state banquet hosted by President Duma Boko, President Kagame praised the talent found within Africa. He said, “Africa does not lack talent or ideas. What has often been missing is the alignment between vision and implementation. Countries like ours can help bridge this gap through stronger cooperation and increased productivity.”
He further explained that sustainable development requires prioritizing the well-being of citizens. President Kagame also highlighted the need for leadership to create opportunities for young people.
“We believe that sustainable development is achieved through purposeful governance, accountability, and prioritizing the well-being of our citizens. These shared values reflect the broader vision of our continent.” President Kagame Said.
By learning from Botswana’s management of natural resources, Rwanda continues to strengthen its economic ties within the region.
