President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has used nuanced language to address the possibility of a third term, stating that while he does not seek it, he would accept it if the people desire it. He made these remarks during a press conference in Kinshasa on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Debate Over Constitutional Changes
The issue of amending certain articles of the Constitution regarding presidential term limits remains a major point of discussion in the DRC. Opposition parties have accused President Tshisekedi and his allies of plotting to change the law to allow him to run for office again.
During the media briefing, Tshisekedi spoke in somewhat ambiguous terms, saying he “does not want a third term, but if the citizens want it, he will accept.”
“I do not want a third term, but let me tell you: if the people want me to lead for a third term, I will accept,” he stated.

Tshisekedi Says Focus Remains on Current Mandate
Tshisekedi emphasized that his current priority is fulfilling his promises to the citizens, including ensuring security and national sovereignty.
“The mandate I was given by the people is not to stop working on what I promised during this term, but rather to prepare for future generations,” he added.
The Congolese leader also mentioned that if he were to leave office, “I will always be there in the shadows, ready to help my successor whenever they may need me.”

Opposition Criticizes Tshisekedi’s Leadership
Opponents of a third term for Tshisekedi, who has led the Congo since 2019, accuse his administration of weakness. Their criticisms are largely centered on a stagnant national economy, persistent corruption, and the security crisis that has plagued the country, particularly in the East where both local and foreign armed groups continue to operate.
