A football legend in the East African region, particularly in Rwanda and Burundi, Kanyankore Gilbert ‘Yaoundé’, has passed away at the age of 72.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, the sad news was announced that he had died, one year after retiring from coaching. He had been ill for a long time.
A Distinguished Career at Vital’O FC
Kanyankore was a prominent figure in both Rwanda and Burundi, especially at Vital’O FC, where he served as both a player and a coach for 30 years, winning 21 trophies.
In 1989, he began his coaching career at Vital’O FC in Burundi, starting as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach, a position he held during his 30 years at the club.
From Huye to Regional Football Greatness
He was born in Huye District in 1954. While still young, his family moved to Burundi, where he grew up until completing secondary school before continuing his studies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
It was there that he began his football career after completing studies in sports physiotherapy. He had studied this field in Burundi before starting his career as both a football player and a coach.
Coaching Journey Across Rwanda
After that, he coached Rwanda B for a short period before managing Rayon Sports, APR FC, Kiyovu Sports, Les Citadins (AS Kigali), and Bugesera FC, which was the last club he coached in Rwanda.
