Fashion can be more than fabric and trends it can be a way of preserving history, celebrating identity, and inspiring people across generations. For Elodie Fromenteau, founder of Ndabaga Streetwear, clothing became the perfect medium to share one of Rwanda’s most powerful stories: the legend of Ndabaga, the courageous young woman who disguised herself as a man to save her aging father from military service.
The Legend That Inspired a Fashion Brand
Ndabaga is one of the most celebrated heroines in Rwandan history. Born as the only child of Nyamutezi from Bwishaza, in present-day Western Province, she grew up determined to protect her father.
According to legend, Ndabaga trained in skills traditionally associated with warriors, including Intore dance, archery, spear throwing, combat techniques, running, and other physical exercises. Because only sons were allowed to redeem their fathers from military duty, she concealed her identity and secretly took her father’s place in battle.
Her bravery and exceptional abilities eventually earned her recognition from the king, who rewarded her with cattle. Though admired by many, her achievements also challenged social expectations and sparked jealousy among some men who resented seeing a woman receive such honors.
For Elodie Fromenteau, discovering this story in 2022 was a life-changing moment.”I was deeply moved by Ndabaga’s courage and determination. I immediately felt that her story deserved to be shared with the world,” she says.
Turning History Into Fashion
Rather than retelling the legend through books or speeches, Fromenteau chose a different path: fashion.
She wanted to create clothing that carried the spirit of Ndabaga without relying on long written explanations.”I started asking myself how I could tell Ndabaga’s story through fashion not simply by printing words on clothes, but by creating pieces that were beautiful and meaningful,” she explains.
The idea came naturally. Fashion had always been part of her personality.”Since I was a child, I never liked wearing clothes chosen by other people. I always wanted to choose my own outfits.”
She began sketching designs and imagining how symbols, colors, and visual elements could communicate Ndabaga’s strength and courage.
A Personal Connection to Ndabaga’s Story
Fromenteau’s connection to Ndabaga goes beyond history.
Born to a French father and a Rwandan mother, she was born in Cameroon, raised in France, and later worked for Armani in the United Kingdom before returning to Rwanda in 2021.
She says Ndabaga’s story resonated deeply because of the close relationship she shared with her own father.”I grew up extremely close to my father. I was very much like a boy growing up sometimes I even felt like one. I always believed I could do anything if I put my mind to it. In Ndabaga’s story, I saw the love she had for her father, a love that drove her to transform herself to save him.”
Another childhood memory strengthened her belief that clothing could carry powerful stories: a shirt her father often wore bearing the name Bujumbura, the city where her parents first met.”That shirt made me realize that clothing can preserve memories and tell meaningful stories.”
Why She Chose Streetwear
Fromenteau eventually decided to build the brand around streetwear, a style designed for everyday life rather than formal occasions.
Ndabaga Streetwear focuses on items such as:
- T-shirts
- Hoodies
- Women’s crop tops
- Jeans
- Other casual apparel
For her, streetwear was the best way to make Ndabaga’s story accessible to a wide audience, especially young people.
She hopes every person who wears the brand feels a sense of strength and possibility.”My greatest wish is for anyone wearing my clothes to feel like a hero in their own life. Everyone faces challenges and has dreams they are trying to achieve. I want people to feel supported, motivated, and confident.”
A Global Vision Rooted in Rwandan Heritage
Although the brand was born in Rwanda, Fromenteau’s ambitions are global.
She dreams of seeing Ndabaga Streetwear become an internationally recognized fashion label, with stores and branches in countries around the world.
Her ultimate goal is not only commercial success, but also cultural storytelling.”I want people everywhere to discover the spirit of Ndabaga the courage, determination, and love that her story represents.”
For Fromenteau, fashion is a bridge between heritage and the future. Through Ndabaga Streetwear, she hopes to carry a timeless Rwandan legend from local history to the global stage, proving that stories of bravery can still inspire new generations one garment at a time.
