U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to assist Russian President Vladimir Putin in finding a solution to the ongoing war in Ukraine following a nearly 90-minute telephone conversation between the two leaders.
The call took place on July 4, coinciding with U.S. Independence Day, according to the Kremlin.
Trump and Putin Hold Lengthy Phone Conversation
The discussion was confirmed by Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, who said the two leaders spoke for approximately an hour and a half.
According to Ushakov, President Trump expressed his willingness to help facilitate efforts aimed at bringing the conflict in Ukraine to an end as quickly as possible.
The Kremlin described the conversation as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement on major international issues.
Ukraine War Remains Central to Discussions
During the talks, the war in Ukraine was a key topic.
Ushakov said Russia maintains that any long-term settlement should address what Moscow describes as the issue of self-determination in the Donbas region.
He also accused Ukraine and several European countries of seeking to prolong and intensify the conflict, while claiming that Russian forces continue to make gains on the battlefield.
Ukrainian authorities rejected those claims, insisting that the areas mentioned by Russia remain under Ukrainian control.
Trump Also Speaks with Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that he also held a separate conversation with President Trump.
According to Zelenskyy, the two leaders discussed the security situation and the ongoing conflict with Russia.
He added that they expect to continue their discussions during the upcoming NATO Summit, where the war in Ukraine is expected to remain high on the agenda.
U.S. Envoys to Continue Diplomatic Efforts
The Kremlin said U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will continue diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
According to Russian officials, the two envoys are prepared to travel to Moscow as part of continued negotiations between the United States and Russia.
The renewed diplomatic contacts come as international efforts to secure a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement continue.
Putin Highlights Iran Talks Alongside Ukraine
Beyond the conflict in Ukraine, President Putin also expressed optimism about ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran.
According to the Kremlin, Putin believes progress in those negotiations could contribute to a broader and more durable international agreement.
The latest exchanges between Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv underscore continued diplomatic engagement as the international community searches for ways to reduce tensions and move toward a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
