Statistics show that Kirehe District has about 123,150 young people, but only 46,723 (38%) are employed, while more than 76,000 (61%) remain unemployed. This was highlighted on September 25, 2025, during an event in Kirehe that brought together job-seeking youth with potential employers.
Some of the youth who participated told AGACIRO PRESS that the initiative was valuable since it connected them with people and organizations offering jobs that match their skills, or at least internships that could help them gain experience and eventually create their own jobs.
Kuwikeredidi Napoleon, a resident of Kirehe Sector, said:
“Sometimes we have the knowledge but no platform to showcase it or learn new things. Here, there are people willing to teach us skills, which could help us start our own businesses since many are offering training.”
Mukamajyambere Jeannette, from Nasho Sector, said:
“Here we met people working in agriculture, which is also what I do in my sector. What I need now is modern farming skills, and I’ve seen people here who can help me. Such initiatives should happen often because they are very helpful.”
The Kirehe District administration has revealed that it is tackling the problem of youth unemployment by linking them with opportunities available in the district, which is largely based on agriculture, livestock, crafts, arts, and encouraging them to approach financial institutions.
Nsabimana Ruregeya Desire, the District’s Investment Officer, emphasized that Kirehe has strategies to fight unemployment by encouraging youth to embrace work and approach financial institutions for loans to invest in income-generating activities.
He said:
“In Kirehe, we are fighting unemployment by encouraging youth to work instead of idling, and by linking them with financial institutions ready to support them. This event has provided opportunities for youth, as private companies come and meet with many young people seeking jobs or training to enter the job market.”
The district notes that in 2024 it created 9,325 jobs.
Meanwhile, GIZ, supported by the European Union and the German government through its Ministry of Finance and Development, announced plans to create 5,000 jobs in the district in 2025–2026.
