Kirehe District will launch a major project before the end of 2026 to improve local agriculture and resident livelihoods. This initiative involves the rehabilitation and expansion of the Nasho irrigation scheme, known as GFI Mpanga, in the Mpanga Sector.
This development marks a significant step toward increasing agricultural productivity in a region that often faces prolonged dry conditions. By addressing drought challenges directly, the project aims to stabilize food security for thousands of families. Residents expect the new infrastructure to transform the local landscape into a highly productive agricultural hub.

Modern irrigation systems to cover 740 hectares
The rehabilitation and expansion activities will cover an area of 740 hectares. Engineering teams will install modern irrigation systems using water sourced from Lakes Cyambwe and Mpanga. This technology will enable farmers to access sufficient water throughout the year. Consequently, the local community will see a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of their agricultural production.
Transitioning from rain-fed agriculture to irrigation ensures consistent yields regardless of the season. This shift is essential for farmers who want to maximize their land’s potential and compete in larger markets.
