A Nation Rebuilt on Unity After the 1994 Genocide
President Kagame stated that, after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwandans made a clear choice. They chose unity and reconciliation over division.
As a result, the country rebuilt itself through collective effort. At the same time, Rwandans made a strong commitment to reject genocidal politics forever.
Firm Message During National Mourning Period
Speaking at the start of the National Mourning Week and the 100 days of remembrance, Paul Kagame delivered a powerful message.
He said: “I assure you, genocide cannot happen here again. It will never happen.”
Furthermore, he dismissed ongoing regional discussions aimed at undermining Rwanda. He described them as “empty noise” with no real impact.

Call to Defend Truth and Reject False Narratives
President Kagame also addressed ongoing efforts to distort Rwanda’s history. He noted that such attempts have been repeated over time.
However, he emphasized that Rwanda’s strength lies in truth and critical thinking. In addition, he encouraged citizens to speak out whenever they see wrongdoing.
Therefore, protecting truth remains a key pillar of Rwanda’s long-term stability.
Reminder of Past Threats and Regional Instability
The President highlighted the dangers that followed the 1994 genocide. After the defeat of the genocidal government in July 1994, many soldiers and militia groups fled to what was then Zaire.
There, they reorganized and later formed the FDLR. Subsequently, they launched cross-border attacks against Rwanda, killing thousands of civilians.
This period became known as an insurgency. However, by the late 1990s, security along Rwanda’s western border was restored through joint efforts by national forces and local communities.
Strengthening National Defense to Prevent Future Attacks
Since then, Rwanda has focused on strengthening its defense systems. The country continues to ensure it can protect itself from any external threats.
As a result, Rwanda remains vigilant and prepared. Above all, the goal is clear: to prevent any recurrence of violence and to secure lasting peace for future generations.
