President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has awarded a Medal of Honor to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). The award recognizes his leadership and service in regional security operations.

Recognition for Anti-Terrorism Operations
President Museveni honored Gen Muhoozi for leading operations against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. He also praised his role in military missions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Somalia. These operations aimed to improve security and fight terrorism in the region.
Award Given During Tarehe Sita Celebrations
The President presented the medal during Tarehe Sita celebrations. The day marks the launch of the armed struggle by the National Resistance Army (NRA). Every year, Uganda commemorates this historic event to honor those who fought for the country’s liberation.
Brief History of the Liberation Struggle
On February 6, 1981, 27 fighters launched attacks on the Kabamba military barracks. The group included Yoweri Museveni, Paul Kagame, Fred Rwigema, Salim Saleh, and Elly Tumwine. Their goal was to remove the government of Milton Obote and capture Kampala. The struggle ended in 1986, when the NRA took power and Museveni became President.
45th Anniversary Marked in Kabale
This year marked the 45th Tarehe Sita celebration, held in Kabale. President Museveni paid tribute to citizens who lost their lives during the struggle. He noted that a memorial wall now stands in Kabale to honor them. The President also thanked Ugandans for their patriotism and support. He highlighted Kabale and the wider Kigezi region as areas with strong potential in agriculture, tourism, and natural resources.
