Rwanda, in partnership with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), has received the 24th group of asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, consisting of 177 people.
The group arrived in Rwanda on Wednesday night, August 5, 2026, as part of the country’s ongoing humanitarian program to assist migrants facing danger in Libya.

New Arrivals from Five Countries
The new arrivals come from several countries, including Sudan (68), Eritrea (66), Ethiopia (15), South Sudan (26), and Somalia (2). They will temporarily stay at the Gashora Transit Center in Bugesera District, which hosts asylum seekers arriving through previous evacuation programs.
More Than 3,000 Evacuated Since 2019
Since September 2019, Rwanda has received more than 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya. Among them, 2,681 have already been resettled in other countries, including Canada, Sweden, Norway, France, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, and Germany.
The Rwandan government says it remains committed to providing protection and humanitarian support to people in vulnerable situations while contributing to international efforts to save lives and protect those in need.

Agreement with AU and UNHCR
The agreement between Rwanda, the African Union (AU), and UNHCR to host refugees and asylum seekers from Libya was first signed on September 10, 2019, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The arrangement was later renewed, including in August 2024, allowing Rwanda to continue receiving migrants stranded in Libya while seeking safer routes and protection.
