As Rwanda prepares to celebrate National Heroes Day, leaders are urging citizens to reflect on the heroism that shaped the nation. Moreover, the occasion highlights values such as courage, unity, and patriotism. This day is not only for remembering history but also for evaluating how these values continue to guide the country.
Minister Highlights Heroism and Kinyarwanda
In a message during the preparations, Minister Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana emphasized the importance of preserving the values of Rwanda’s heroes. He also stressed the role of the Kinyarwanda language in strengthening national identity. Therefore, protecting and promoting Kinyarwanda is essential for maintaining unity and cultural continuity.
Kinyarwanda: A Unifying National Language
Dr. Bizimana explained that Kinyarwanda has long served as a powerful unifying tool. Through it, generations of Rwandans have shared values, culture, and a collective vision for the country. In addition, using the language reinforces connections between citizens and strengthens a shared sense of purpose.
Heroes as Examples of Courage and Integrity
The Minister highlighted the foresight and bravery of Rwanda’s heroes. He noted that they made difficult decisions to protect and liberate the nation while upholding integrity, patriotism, and self-sacrifice.
“Our heroes showed that heroism is not about words, but about making difficult decisions in challenging moments for the greater good,” he added. Thus, their legacy continues to inspire modern generations.
Encouraging Modern-Day Heroism
Dr. Bizimana stressed that Rwanda needs modern expressions of heroism today. For example, fighting corruption, committing to public service, respecting the law, and protecting unity are all forms of heroism. He encouraged institutions to educate youth about national heroes, preserve cultural values, promote Kinyarwanda, and inspire citizens to contribute to development. As a result, National Heroes Day remains a guide for future generations and a foundation for sustainable growth.
