On June 4, 2026, Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) joined local communities in Juba for a community work initiative known as Umuganda.

The activity took place at Juba Primary School and focused on cleaning, tree planting, waste collection, and clearing bushes around the school grounds. Organised by the Rwandan contingent, the event marked World Environment Day and aimed to provide students with a safe and clean learning environment.

Malaria remains a major health challenge in South Sudan, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) reporting over 3.6 million cases in 2022, rising to 3.8 million in 2023 and 2024. The disease accounts for 66.8% of outpatient visits, particularly affecting children aged six months to five years, whose infection rates increased from 32% in 2017 to 52.6% in 2023.
Rwanda’s Peacekeeping Commitment
This initiative highlights Rwanda’s commitment to peacekeeping beyond security. By engaging in environmental protection, health awareness, and community development, Rwandan peacekeepers demonstrate that their mission is not only about maintaining peace but also about improving the daily lives of host communities.
Broader Impact
Through activities like Umuganda, Rwanda continues to showcase its model of community service and solidarity abroad. These efforts strengthen ties between peacekeepers and local populations, while contributing to healthier, cleaner, and more resilient communities in South Sudan.
