Kirehe District has distributed cows to 90 vulnerable households from Gahara, Gatore, and Kirehe sectors under the Girinka Munyarwanda Programme. The distribution took place on 14 January 2026.
The activity was organized through a partnership between Kirehe District, the RDDP II Project, and Heifer International Rwanda. The main goal was to help families improve their livelihoods and reduce poverty through livestock farming.

Well-Organized Distribution across Three Sectors
The cow distribution took place in all three sectors in a coordinated manner. Officials grouped beneficiaries based on their ability to care for the animals.
Out of the 90 households, 30 received cows for the first time. Other beneficiaries had already received cows in the past. They received extra training on modern livestock management and animal care.
All beneficiaries promised to care for the cows properly and follow the Girinka principle of passing on the first calf to another family.
Beneficiaries Share Joy and New Hope
Beneficiaries expressed happiness and hope for a better future. A woman from Gahara Sector said the cow had changed her life. She explained that she used to rely on casual labor. She now expects milk for her children and manure for her crops.
A beneficiary from Gatore Sector said the cow would support long-term development. He noted that milk improves family nutrition, while manure increases farm production. He also promised that his family would take good care of the cow.
Authorities Stress Sustainability and Training
Kirehe District leaders said the Girinka Programme continues to improve the lives of vulnerable citizens. They encouraged beneficiaries to focus on animal health and disease prevention. They also urged them to share knowledge with others.
Representatives from RDDP II and Heifer International Rwanda praised the strong partnership with the district. They confirmed continued support through training in livestock farming, nutrition, and household management.
The initiative is expected to increase agricultural production, improve nutrition, and help families become self-reliant in Kirehe District.
