UEFA Withdraws from FIFA Competitions over World Cup Commercialization Plans

The member associations of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have voted to condemn and refuse to participate in the FIFA World Cup if the world football governing body (FIFA) proceeds with its plan to sell shares in its competitions to private investors.

The decision was made during an extraordinary meeting convened to discuss FIFA’s proposal announced earlier this week, in which the organization responsible for organizing and governing world football revealed plans to enter into partnerships with private investors.

UEFA Says the World Cup Is “Not for Sale”

UEFA, the governing body of European football, had already expressed its opposition to the proposal by issuing two strong statements condemning the idea. The decision taken by its member associations further demonstrated the seriousness of their disapproval.

UEFA stated, “The FIFA World Cup should not be treated as an investment product.”

It added, “It is one of the greatest legacies in football. It has been built over many years by players, national teams, and fans across all continents. No part of it should ever be handed over to private investors. The FIFA World Cup is not for sale.”

Heated Debate Among Football Leaders

It is reported that the Chair of the Football Association (FA), Debbie Hewitt, and its Chief Executive, Mark Bullingham, were among those who spoke during the meeting. Participants said the discussions were highly contentious, as those opposed to FIFA’s proposal expressed strong anger.

Although Debbie Hewitt is one of FIFA’s eight Vice Presidents, she was reportedly unaware of the discussions FIFA President Gianni Infantino had been holding regarding the proposal.

Withdrawal Would Affect All FIFA Competitions

UEFA’s withdrawal from FIFA would cover all competitions organized by FIFA, including the FIFA Men’s World Cup, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The decision will only take effect if Infantino’s proposal is approved by FIFA’s member associations.

Women’s World Cup Qualifiers Could Be First Test

The first major competition in which this decision could be put to the test is expected to be in October, when the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off matches are scheduled to take place.
