As Rwanda marked the 32nd anniversary of Liberation Day (Kwibohora32), Nyagatare District highlighted the country’s continued journey toward unity and reconciliation by presenting Byuma Faustin from Rwimiyaga sectot, Ntoma cell with a cow as a symbol of solidarity, reconciliation, and sustainable livelihoods.
The ceremony took place on July 4, 2026 in Rwimiyaga Sector, during celebrations commemorating the 32nd Liberation Day, which honors the bravery of the former Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA Inkotanyi) for ending the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and liberating the country.

The event brought together district leaders, residents, security personnel, and development partners to celebrate Rwanda’s liberation journey and reflect on the country’s remarkable transformation over the past three decades.
Byuma Faustin: “This Cow Represents Hope and a New Beginning”
Receiving the cow, Byuma Faustine expressed gratitude, saying the gift carries a deeper meaning than its economic value.
He explained that it symbolizes the unity and reconciliation that continue to define Rwanda’s post-genocide recovery.
He said: “This cow is much more than livestock. It represents the love that our country has for its people, the spirit of unity, and the reconciliation that continues to bring Rwandans together. The Genocide left us devastated, but today we live in a country that cares for its citizens and encourages us to build a better future.”
Byuma added that she would take good care of the cow so it could improve her family’s livelihood while serving as a reminder of the importance of peace and national unity.
Mayor Kakooza Henry: Liberation Brought Peace and Development
Nyagatare District Mayor Kakooza Henry said Liberation Day is not only an occasion to celebrate Rwanda’s history but also an opportunity to recognize the progress achieved since the country’s liberation.
He noted that the values of unity and reconciliation remain central to Rwanda’s development: “Liberation brought peace, security, and leadership that puts citizens first. Initiatives such as supporting vulnerable families demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that every Rwandan participates in and benefits from the country’s development.”
Mayor Kakooza urged residents to continue safeguarding national unity, reject anything that could divide Rwandans, and actively support government programs aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
Remembering the RPA Inkotanyi’s Role in Ending the Genocide
The ceremony also paid tribute to the RPA Inkotanyi, whose military campaign ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and restored peace and hope to Rwanda.
Speakers emphasized that the liberation struggle laid the foundation for the country’s security, stability, and socio-economic transformation.
Participants also stressed the importance of educating younger generations about Rwanda’s history to ensure that genocide ideology is never allowed to re-emerge.
Residents Encouraged to Build on Unity and Development
Residents attending the celebrations said the 32 years since Rwanda’s liberation have brought significant improvements in security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
They observed that initiatives such as donating cows to vulnerable citizens strengthen social cohesion while helping families improve their living standards.
Many described the gesture as an example of how community support contributes to both reconciliation and sustainable development.

As the Kwibohora32 celebrations concluded in Nyagatare, leaders and residents reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the achievements of Rwanda’s liberation.
They emphasized that unity, reconciliation, patriotism, and hard work remain the pillars of the country’s continued progress.
The presentation of a cow to Byuma Faustine was widely viewed as a powerful symbol of Rwanda’s enduring commitment to healing, shared prosperity, and ensuring that no citizen is left behind as the nation continues its development journey.
