An Israeli soldier serving in southern Lebanon was seen smashing a statue of Jesus with a large stone-breaking hammer, commonly known as a “sledgehammer.”
As a result, many people in Lebanon viewed the act as a serious insult to their religious beliefs. Many Christians believe that Jesus came to Earth to redeem sinners, was killed and crucified, then resurrected before ascending to Heaven, as described in the New Testament of the Bible.

Religious Beliefs and Reactions
Most Jews, especially those living in Israel, do not believe that Jesus came to Earth. Instead, they follow the teachings of the Old Testament. They continue to await the coming of a savior to redeem humanity and regard the account of Jesus’ crucifixion as fictional.
Therefore, the incident drew attention because it involved beliefs that remain deeply important to many communities in the region.
IDF Response to the Incident
On the night of April 19, 2026, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the soldier’s behavior does not reflect its values. It also stated that, after an investigation, all those involved in the incident will be held accountable.
The IDF said, “Appropriate measures will be taken against those responsible based on the findings.”
Government Statement and Lebanon Operations
Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Sa’ar, described the destruction of a Christian symbol as regrettable. He emphasized that Israel respects different religions and their sacred symbols.
He stated: “Israel is a country that respects religious diversity and its sacred symbols, and upholds tolerance and mutual respect among faiths. We apologize to any Christian who has been hurt by this act,”
Meanwhile, the IDF has deployed troops to Lebanon to confront the armed group Hezbollah. It also clarified that it has no intention of damaging civilian infrastructure, including religious sites. In addition, it is assisting local residents in restoring the destroyed symbol.
