The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has announced that it will begin rewarding individuals who follow road safety regulations and help prevent traffic accidents under the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro campaign.
Announcement Made During Rusizi Ceremony
The announcement was made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), CG Félix Namuhoranye, on January 21, 2026, during the closing ceremony of the first phase of the Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro initiative held in Rusizi District, Western Province.
Leaders Stress Shared Responsibility
Speaking at the event, IGP Namuhoranye said, “Road safety is not the responsibility of the police alone. It requires discipline from drivers, pedestrians, and all road users.”
He identified reckless driving, overloading, and failure to observe safety rules as major causes of road accidents.
Public Welcomes the Initiative
Sadi Bizumuremyi, a popular social media motorist, welcomed the initiative, saying, “This will encourage us to drive more responsibly and help save lives.”
Western Province Governor Ntibitura Jean Bosco also emphasized caution, particularly in Rusizi’s mountainous terrain, saying drivers must remain alert at all times.
Alarming Accident Figures Highlight Urgency
Highlighting the urgency of the campaign, IGP Namuhoranye revealed that since 2022, Rwanda has recorded 41,164 road accidents, resulting in 2,907 deaths. “In the next phase, we will reward drivers and motorists who respect traffic laws and contribute to safer roads,” he said.
