A resident of Mpanga Sector in Kirehe District, who lost 33 animals, including 15 cows, after they were struck by lightning, has been compensated with 25 cows through a joint effort between the local leadership and residents, who described him as an exemplary neighbour.

Details of the Tragic Incident
The tragedy occurred in broad daylight this Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Kacyiru Village, Bwiyorere Cell. Lightning struck the livestock of a single resident, killing 15 cows and 18 sheep. The animals were in the pasture of the owner, Mr. Patrick Mutarambirwa, a man well-known for his good relations with his neighbours.
Community and Local Government Response
Deeply moved by the loss, local residents and local government officials immediately mobilised to find a way to help him recover his livelihood. Adelte Hakizamungu, the Executive Secretary of Mpanga Sector, stated that as soon as the tragedy struck, both the authorities and fellow citizens went to comfort him and provide restorative support.

Compensation and Support Provided
“The District provided a cow to help him start over, and other citizens followed suit, gifting him twenty five (25) cattle, comprising 23 heifers and two bulls, as well as nine sheep and one goat,” she said.

The official praised the residents for the love they showed their fellow citizen, noting that it reinforces the unity and mutual support that are cornerstones of Rwandan culture.
Other Lightning Incidents Reported Nationwide
Over the past weekend, lightning strikes were reported in various parts of the country with devastating consequences. On Sunday alone, lightning claimed the lives of seven people in Rwanda: five in the Western Province and two in the Northern Province.

Regional Breakdown of Fatalities
Among the five victims in the Western Province, three were from Rutsiro District and two from Rubavu District. The two victims from the Northern Province were both from Burera District, specifically in the Cyeru and Rwerere Sectors.
