Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development, saying the world needs enough time to prepare ways of managing the risks posed by increasingly advanced technology.
In a message published on his website on September 12, 2026, Amodei said AI development should continue but warned that greater caution is needed as the capabilities of the technology increase rapidly. “We should slow down the rate at which we increase AI capabilities. Progress will still appear to be happening rapidly, but we need to make the best use of the time we have.”

Amodei Warns About Growing AI Risks
Amodei, who generally supports the advancement of AI, said the technology could create serious risks if it is not properly controlled.
He warned that AI could be used for harmful activities, including cyberattacks, technology-enabled terrorism and potentially severe disruption to the global economy.
he said: “Competition driven by commercial interests could make these risks more severe.”
According to Amodei, the race to develop increasingly powerful AI systems could create additional pressure on companies to move quickly, potentially making it more difficult to put adequate safeguards in place.

AI Systems Beginning to Improve Themselves
Amodei said AI has advanced significantly in recent months, with some systems beginning to demonstrate the ability to improve themselves.
He warned that if such developments continue without adequate safeguards, AI could eventually reach a level where it exceeds humans’ ability to understand and control it.
The Anthropic CEO said this possibility makes it important for governments, companies and society to use the available time to develop appropriate safety measures.
Warning Over Control of the Internet
Amodei further warned that without sufficient oversight, AI could eventually become capable of taking control of a large portion of the internet within six to 12 months.
He said such a development could potentially cause losses worth billions of dollars.
His warning comes as AI companies continue to compete in developing increasingly advanced systems, while concerns grow over the ability of existing safeguards and regulations to keep pace with technological progress.

Anthropic Develops Claude AI
Anthropic is one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies and is the developer of Claude, one of the widely used AI applications.
Although Amodei supports continued AI progress, his latest message emphasizes the need to balance technological advancement with preparations to manage potentially serious risks.
