Prominent opposition politician Julius Malema has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa to resign after the Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament violated the constitution by blocking impeachment proceedings against him in 2022.

Constitutional Court Decision Opens New Political Debate
The ruling followed a case brought by opposition parties, including Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and could pave the way for renewed efforts to remove Ramaphosa from office.
Controversy Over Stolen Money at Ramaphosa’s Farm
In 2022, a panel of legal experts found that Ramaphosa had questions to answer after thieves stole more than $500,000 (£370,000) hidden in furniture at his rural home. The theft raised suspicions about the source of the money, though the president denied any wrongdoing.

Previous Impeachment Efforts Blocked in Parliament
Efforts to impeach him were halted four years ago in Parliament, where his African National Congress (ANC) held a majority. Since the 2024 general elections, however, the ANC has governed through a coalition.
ANC Responds to Court Ruling
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the party welcomed and respected Friday’s ruling, telling South Africa’s News24 that party leaders and officials would meet to discuss the decision and issue a response.

Malema Demands Immediate Resignation
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Malema insisted that Ramaphosa must step down and “focus on this process of removal from office because it has serious personal consequences for him.”
