The United States Africa Command has announced that two U.S. soldiers are missing during a joint military exercise known as African Lion, organized in collaboration with several African countries.

Search and Rescue Operations Underway
Military authorities from both the United States and Morocco have begun coordinated search and rescue operations. The efforts are focused around the Cap Draa Military School, located in the southern Moroccan city of Tan Tan.
Soldiers Went Missing Near a Cliff
According to the Moroccan military, the two soldiers went missing near a cliff close to the training area. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

About the African Lion Exercise
The African Lion exercise is a large-scale, high-level military training program organized by the United States in partnership with African nations. It also includes participation from member countries of the NATO.
Purpose of the Exercise
The exercise aims to improve military professionalism, strengthen cooperation between participating forces, and prepare troops to respond jointly to crises in Africa and beyond.

Scale and Locations of the Exercise
This year’s exercise began on April 27 and will end on May 8, 2026. It is being held across several African countries, including Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.
AFRICOM reports that the largest portion of the exercise is taking place in Morocco, involving more than 5,000 soldiers from over 40 countries.
