In a match watched by His Excellency President Paul Kagame, APR VC defeated Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos VC 3-0 in the opening match of the 2026 African Championship being hosted in Rwanda.
The match took place on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at BK Arena and marked an impressive start for the Rwandan side in front of home supporters.

Opening Ceremony Highlights Rwanda’s Growing Volleyball Status
The game was preceded by the official opening ceremony of the tournament.
During the ceremony, Rwanda Volleyball Federation President Ngarambe Raphael said hosting the competition for the first time was a major milestone for the country. He thanked the Government of Rwanda for its continued support in developing volleyball and for making the tournament possible.
Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire said the event was also an opportunity to reflect on the progress Rwanda has made in competitive sports.
She added that continued investment is needed in talent development, coach education, and clear pathways that help athletes reach their full potential, noting that sustainable sports growth begins there.
Match Honors Victims of the Genocide Against the Tutsi
Before kickoff, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Organizers had agreed to the tribute in recognition that the tournament is taking place in Rwanda during the 100 days of the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The moment of remembrance added significance to the opening of the continental competition.
APR VC Dominate in Straight Sets
APR VC, who finished fourth in the 2025 African Championship, began the match strongly despite several key players including Mutabazi Yves, Muvara Ronald, Niyogisubizo Samuel Tyson, and Rukundo Willy starting on the bench.
Players such as Paul Akan, Niyonshima Samuel, and Kanamugire Prince led the charge as APR VC won the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Black Rhinos attempted to respond, but APR VC remained dominant and cruised to a 25-10 victory.
The Rwandan champions continued their momentum in the final set, introducing fresh players who maintained the same intensity. APR VC comfortably secured the third set 25-11 to seal a convincing 3-0 win.
The 2026 African Championship continues with more matches at BK Arena and Petit Stade Amahoro in Remera, starting from 10:00 a.m.
