British citizens may continue facing high prices for more than eight months following the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, according to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones.
Speaking on April 26, 2026, during an interview with BBC, Jones said the United Kingdom government is preparing measures to respond to possible shortages of food and petroleum products caused by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
He explained that price increases may continue for eight months or longer depending on global economic conditions.

Food, Fuel and Travel Costs Expected to Rise
Jones warned that households could experience increased costs for food, airline tickets, fuel, and other essential goods.
According to him, disruptions to energy production and transportation across the Middle East have reduced supply, while some operations have reportedly stopped because of the war. This has continued to place pressure on global markets and prices.
Prime Minister Calls Emergency Meetings
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that a leaders’ meeting will be held on Tuesday to discuss the issue of rising prices.
Cabinet meetings are also expected to take place twice a week as the government searches for solutions to food shortages and economic pressure.

UK Growth Forecast Reduced
The United Kingdom economy is already under strain due to the wider effects of the conflict.
The International Monetary Fund has lowered the country’s economic growth forecast from 1.3% to 0.8%.

Opposition Calls for Support Measures
Meanwhile, members of the Liberal Democrats have urged the government to prioritize food security, support families struggling to afford basic needs, and consider reducing taxes.
