Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described a Russian drone attack on a crowded passenger train as an act of “terrorism.” The incident occurred in Ukraine’s north-eastern Kharkiv region when one carriage was struck directly and two nearby drones exploded.
Local officials said more than 200 passengers were on board at the time, with at least five people killed and several others injured. Zelensky stated that 18 people were inside the damaged carriage and emphasized that there was no military reason to target civilians.
Emergency services released images showing a severely damaged carriage still burning after the attack. Prosecutors confirmed the strike happened near Yazykove village on a route used by civilians and soldiers travelling between western and eastern Ukraine.
Deadly Attacks Continue in Odesa and Kyiv Region
In southern Ukraine, the port city of Odesa was also targeted by dozens of Russian drones. Officials reported that three people were killed and many others wounded after several floors of a residential building collapsed.
Energy authorities said a local power facility suffered heavy damage, worsening disruptions to electricity and heating. Attacks reportedly continued for a second night in the area.
Meanwhile, in the Kyiv region, a residential building was hit, killing a couple and injuring their four-year-old child. Police said the strike occurred in a district close to the capital.
Across the country, millions of Ukrainians remain without reliable access to heating, electricity, and water due to repeated attacks on infrastructure.
Ongoing War and Uncertain Peace Talks
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls about 20% of the country’s territory. In recent months, Moscow has increased drone and missile strikes, particularly targeting energy and transport systems during winter.
Although Russia has not commented on the train attack, Zelensky said such actions would be considered terrorism in any country.
Last week, Ukraine and Russia held talks in the United Arab Emirates, with participation from US representatives. All sides described the discussions as constructive. However, major disagreements over territory remain unresolved, and further negotiations are expected in the coming days.
