The Rwanda Meteorology Agency, Meteo Rwanda, has reported that rainfall recorded across much of Rwanda between September 11 and 20, 2026, was below the levels normally expected during this period, based on rainfall records from at least the past 30 years.
In its agricultural weather bulletin published on September 23, Meteo Rwanda indicated that 38 weather stations recorded below-average rainfall, while six stations received rainfall above the normal level.
Rainfall Remains Low in Most Areas
Rainfall increased in some parts of Rubavu, Rutsiro and Burera districts, as well as in a few areas of Ngoma, Rwamagana, Gatsibo and Kayonza. In areas that received rainfall, it fell over periods ranging from one to four days.
The highest rainfall was recorded at the Butaro weather station in Burera District, which measured 78.2 millimetres over four days. It was followed by Murunda in Rutsiro District, which recorded 70.4 millimetres, and Gisenyi Aero in Rubavu District, which recorded 53.4 millimetres.
The Mpanga weather station in Kirehe District did not record any rainfall during the period.
Meteo Rwanda said soil moisture continued to decline across most parts of the country, except in the northern part of the Western Province, where it increased. Temperatures were also above the normal range recorded between September 11 and 20 in most parts of the country.

More Rain Expected Before September Ends
For the remaining days of September, Meteo Rwanda forecasts between 9 and 75 millimetres of rainfall from September 21 to 30, which is within the normal range expected during this period.
The agency expects soil moisture to increase, particularly in the Western and Northern provinces, as well as in Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru districts.
Farmers Urged to Prepare for Season A 2027
Meteo Rwanda urged farmers to consult agricultural officers as they prepare for Season A 2027 and to take precautions against the effects of strong winds expected in different parts of the country.
Livestock farmers were also advised to consult veterinarians on how to protect their animals based on the expected weather conditions.
The latest forecast comes as Rwanda September rainfall remains below average in many areas, while more rainfall is expected during the final days of the month.
