The Director General of RFI, Lt Col (Rtd) Dr. Charles Karangwa, said this figure reflects the significant contribution forensic science continues to make to Rwanda’s justice system.
“Since 2018, our mission has been to ensure justice is based on credible and reliable evidence. Resolving nearly one hundred thousand cases shows that our justice system is increasingly anchored in undeniable truth. This builds public confidence that truth will always prevail.”
RFI conducts investigations in various areas, including; DNA and genetics, to identify suspects or determine relationships between individuals. Toxicology, to examine drugs, medicines, and substances that may be used in crimes. Document and handwriting analysis, to detect forgery or settle disputes involving written materials.Digital forensics, to analyze computers, phones, and other electronic devices used in crimes.
Over the past seven years, these services have been crucial in resolving major cases related to murder, sexual violence, cybercrime, and other serious offenses.
The awareness campaign in Nyagatare aims to help citizens understand RFI’s operations, the services it offers, and the importance of forensic science in ensuring justice.
Division Mananger in Nyagatare District, Ndorimana Denny, welcomed RFI and commended the institute for choosing to engage directly with the people of Nyagatare. He urged residents to better appreciate the role of forensic investigations in fighting crime and upholding truth.
“We are delighted to host RFI in our district. It is an opportunity for our people to learn about services that ensure justice is delivered on time and based on truth. This is a great contribution to our country’s development.”
RFI also plans to expand its capacity by opening more branches across the country. After establishing one in Rwamagana, it now plans to open another in Nyagatare. All this will be done using modern technology, ensuring that forensic services are delivered more efficiently, reliably, and widely accessible to citizens nationwide.
