Equity Bank Rwanda has signed a partnership agreement with ESP to promote women entrepreneurs engaged in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The agreement was officially signed on April 30, 2026. Over a one year implementation period, more than 300 women operating SMEs are expected to benefit from improved access to financial services, enhanced business skills, and expanded market opportunities.

Boosting Inclusive Economic Growth
This partnership aligns with the Government of Rwanda’s agenda to promote inclusive economic growth, strengthen SMEs, create employment opportunities, and support the private sector.
The Managing Director of Equity Bank Rwanda, Hannington Namara, emphasized the important role SMEs play in driving the national economy. He stated that the bank chose to collaborate with ESP to specifically support women entrepreneurs.

Support for Over 300 Women Entrepreneurs
Namara explained that through the one year program, more than 300 women entrepreneurs will receive better access to financial services, financial literacy training, business management skills, and connections to larger markets.
These efforts are expected to help women-owned businesses grow sustainably. He also noted that some entrepreneurs have already completed six months of financial training, while remaining challenges include access to capital and advanced financial management knowledge.

Expanding Access to Finance
Kabango Lowe said the partnership aims to address barriers women entrepreneurs face when accessing financial institutions and essential services such as loans. She added that although the agreement is initially for one year, there are plans to extend the initiative and scale it nationwide across Rwanda.

Women and SMEs in Rwanda
Statistics indicate that women make up 49% of SME operators in Rwanda, yet only 25% are able to access loans from financial institutions.
Under this partnership, Equity Bank Rwanda will provide loans tailored to SMEs, user friendly savings solutions, and digital financial services designed to help women entrepreneurs grow and expand their businesses.
